grand oyster giveaway

In May of this year, covid19 disrupted the shellfish industry of Martha’s Vineyard, where I live, and this included oysters. Restaurants that usually started reopening in April or May (after being closed all winter) stayed closed, leaving no market for the fresh, local oysters. One person, who remained anonymous, saw 2 problems: this – and that people in the community need a source of protein.
So she donated money to buy 18,000 oysters and the grand giveaway began! Cars lined up on a Saturday to receive 36 oysters in a bag – provided there was a nice cooler in their car to keep the oysters cold on the drive home. The line of cars stretched like a strand of angel-hair pasta, and my parents’ friends were in that line. The next day, they were invited over to enjoy this treat! They sat outside on the neighbors’ deck – opposite ends of a long table to social distance, and were able to reap the benefit of this generosity.
According to the local newspaper, 11 oyster growers participated in this awesome event. Yum!
